Assertion failed:m_PrimaryBufferPtr

I reently just downloaded Avid to my mac which is running on Yosemite software. I had a trial version of avid on my computer last year and once the trial was done I unistalled avid and bought the software a few weeks ago. When I try to start up avid I get a message that tells me I do not have the necessary 8gb of RAM to run avid and I click on the proceed button. After I proceed I then get two speperate error messages that say the same thing. The first message comes from avid and says "Exception:FATAL_ERROR, msg:Assertion failed:m_pPrimaryBufferPtr,file:/Snapshots/relengmtnlion2_1418961066/coresw/core/src/player/ALocateBufferMgr.c, line:465" It only gives me the option to click ok and when i do aother messsage comes up with the same message but it then gives me the options "create report, exit application, continue and debugger" each one just leads the application to exit itself.

I'm not sure what kind of problem this is or how to fix it. Please help.

Folks,

Long time no post, but a new one for tme this evening and I thought I would share...

Trying to open a bin in 8.4 and 8.5 getting this error:

@ Thu Feb 04 19:35:22 2016

* Unable to open file '! PART 1_2_4'.

* Exception: URLLocator does not have this function yet.

Not one that I am familiar with if I am honest, just dropping this into the hive-mind of the forum to see if you have run into it at all? In contains three sequence parts of course.

Think I will be heading to a fresh backup but no harm in asking...

cheers

Audio Track Effect Tool flashing

Hi folks:

Another quirk to add to the list for MC8.5 – the Audio Track Effect Tool 'flashes' intermittently and repeatedly for 2-3 second bursts.  Used to do that a bit in Yosemite 8.4.4, but now it does it non-stop.  Makes it pretty difficult to adjust channel strips, etc.

I recall reading of others with the same issue?

Best, JIM.

Apple Mac 13'' for basic previewing & cutting out in the field?

Is anyone using an Apple Mac 13 inch for basic previewing & cutting out in the field. I'm looking for a new Mac laptop and I'm wondering if the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display will do for basic capturing out in the field and previewing. These are the specs
13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display
  • 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz
  • 8GB 1866MHz LPDDR3 SDRAM
  • 512GB PCIe-based Flash Storage
  • Intel Iris Graphics 6100
I know the 15'' would be better however keeping costs down is important. Any advice would be great

Older Avid Equipment & Software

A local company that used to create VHS training videos for hotel chains recently gave me a TON of their old A/V equipment.  It had been sitting in their storage room unused for quite some time.  This includes betamax and VHS dubbing equipment, speakers, monitors, old RAID arrays, and a good amount of Avid equipment.  I have very little experience with this sort of equipment outside high school TV production.  I would like some assistance identifying exactly what I have and seeing if it is worth anything.  As far as the Avid equipment goes I have an Avid 0020-00365-01 E breakout box, an Avid PCI Extender 85466205, an Avid 888 Audio Interface, and an old Powermac G4 with an Avid dongle, keyboard and some Avid software on it and a card in it. Any help identifying this equipment would be greatly appreciated.

Best i/o break-out box for MC 8.5 to supply 3rd monitor, etc

I've recently up-graded from MC 5.5 to MC 8.5 and as a result my Matrox Mini doesn't work. And all the threads that I've found says that it is time to throw it away.

Any suggestions as to replacement? What is the best PCI card i/o that will allow a third monitor for full screen, and some audio and video inputs/outputs?

Aja? Or?

And a second product question - has any manufacturer created a hub that has more than two thunderbolt inputs? Again I need to have a third monitor for full time, full screen, in this case from a lap top that has just one Thunderbolt port.

Thanks!

Recovering Quicklook for DNxHD on OS X 10.9-10.10

$

Posting a little tip that corrects a little annoyance with Mavericks and Yosemite.  It is no longer possible to preview DNxHD Quicktimes (and all other QTs in codecs other than Prores ou H264) with the space-bar.

It turns out that the old behaviour can be recovered by "transplanting" the quicklook components that handle quicktime files from a copy of OS X 10.8.5.  It works fine - although you need to redo the steps when you update the OS, and you need access to a machine with 10.8.5 to grab the files.

On a machine with Mountain Lion installed take a copy of the following two files/directories:

/System/Library/QuickLook/Movie.qlgenerator

/System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Frameworks/QuickLookUI.framework/PlugIns/Movie.qldisplay

Put them safe somewhere (Avoid FAT32 formatted USB keys as permissions may be lost - zip them if in doubt)

On the machine with Mavericks/Yosemite, take a copy of the existing files/directories in these locations and replace them with those copied from 10.8.5.  Be careful to only replace these files (not any part of the directories that contain them - doing so will create major headaches)

Run the following commands from the Terminal to repair permissions (you need to have a password set on the account):

sudo chmod -R a+x /System/Library/QuickLook/Movie.qlgenerator

sudo chmod -R a+x /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Frameworks/QuickLookUI.framework/PlugIns/Movie.qldisplay

sudo chown root /System/Library/QuickLook/Movie.qlgenerator

sudo chown root /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Frameworks/QuickLookUI.framework/PlugIns/Movie.qldisplay

Enter your password when prompted (nothing will appear this is normal)

Reboot.

The Space bar will now preview DNxHD files and QT reference files as before.

This should also work with El Capitan, but you will probably need to deactivate System Integrity Protection to replace the files (boot in Recovery mode (Cmd+R on startup), Launch Terminal and type csrutil disable), reboot, replace the files then you can probably reenable System Integrity Protection (csrutil enable in recovery mode) - I have not tested this.

8.5 and what I'm seeing

$

So there were things I saw in 8.5 that made me want to give it a try on some rather large series and because they were just about to start I jumped right in and upgrade 28 systems on Friday right when it came out.

So far most things are running smoothly.  Performance seems to be better.  Here are some things to report though that we are seeing though.

1) When Closing out the software we sometime get a "File ??? not found" error and have to force quite out of the system.

2) One Editor is reporting issues with Mark I/O not working from a mapped button (not keybord) as well as overwrite.  Changeing the workspace back and forth seems to make it go away until it's back.

3) There is a lag when using "Lift" every editor is reporting it to me about 1 to 2 seconds

4) Crashing - All Systems are crashing 1-3 times daily.

5) Were some things seem much improved performance wise others are much more laggy.  IE Clicking on the Bin tab is fast but clicking on subsequent "Format" "Effect", "Setting", "Volumes"(not even sure why this is here, "Usage", "Info" tab resultes in lag and delay with a beach ball lasts 2-3 seconds.

6) Avid attics have not save to Isis since the update.  Every system is defaulting to local drive.

7) 2 of 16 editors experienced an issue where the timeline would only play for 10 seconds at a time then stop automaticly. (not related to play lenght) occasionaly clicking the space bar results in jumping back to the begining of a sequence.  Restart seems to correct this.

The above issues started happening on multiple systems last night at the same time.  Hit play and avid just stops about 5 seconds in.  One sytem was giving the following error.  Exception: AFIFO-TAKEUNDERRUN,CtrlBiFiTo:Auto LFE 11Mostly I am seeing Beach Ball of death crashes at this point.

I'll add anthing else we come across.  These systems are all running on larger series.  1 is heavy multicam reality the other is heavey effects driven Doc.

Currently things are running smoother then the first week.

Trouble shooting steps I have taken.

1) Deleted Bay FIles

2) Deleted MCStates

3) Remade all User Profiles

4) Rebuilt Data bases

5) Turned off ManageAMA and Local AMA databases.

6) in Media Cache turned the held memory down to 8gigs and unclicked the option to cach frames.

7) "Tape: 021116A02 - when linked to ama in the bin it says duration 3hrs:36:mins:05secs, and 19frms - actual duration in           seq., says 1hr:16mins:02secs., and 00frms Tape: 021116B02 - when linked to ama in the bin it says duration            10hrs:02:mins:41secs, and 04frms - actual duration in seq., says 1hr:16mins:27secs., and 12frms

Avid will not let you manually enter aux t/c you get an error, I was able to trouble shoot and group but only after I lifted out a couple of minutes of footage at the 00:00:00:00 t/c, will fix group if we can figure out the issue”

Next few things I'll try

Creating new Mac Profiles for the users

Updating Isis SD to 4.7.7

All are on MC 8.5 OS 10.9.5 Isis Client 4.7.6 Isis System Director 4.7.3

BUG: Can't import or set Media Creation settings when using shared storage

$

This is occurring on a system at work that's not one of my profile systems.  Mac Pro, OSX 10.9.5, MC 8.5.  Connecting to a Terrablock.  This had worked perfectly for multiple versions before.

When I have shared volumes mounted, all codecs in Media Creation are greyed out.  Trying to import gives the error "There are no media drives available. You will only be able to import shot logs."

When I do not have shared volumes mounted, all works fine.

I use mostly linking anyway, so I can still keep working.  However, I use import for a few things, and it's frustrating to not be able to import, and not be able to select my render/mixdown codec.  That's the bigger annoyance - I'm stuck with DNxHD-145 / 115.

I can consolidate, transcode, mixdown, render, etc. just fine to the read/write volumes - but can't import, and can't change my Media Creation settings.

New user settings do not resolve the issue.

Serious Media Tool issue - Media Tool Bin won't populate

Since upgrading to MC version 8.5, the media tool will not populate the bin with the items I'm trying to locate.  it does not matter what I choose, Master clips, precomputes, media files, anything.  Nothing shows up.  Doesn't matter if I choose all projects, current project, all drives etc...nothing shows up.

I've recently upgraded from Mac OS X 10.10.3 to 10.10.5 and then upgraded from MC 8.3 to 8.5.  Any ideas why this happening?  I fear I need to go backwards or do a complete wipe and clean install of the operating system and Media composer.

I'm running Avid on a late 2012 iMac, 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 32GB 1600 MHz DDR3 ram, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB graphics card

Sequence-wide LUT?

Hi everyone,

How do I add an installed LUT to all clips in a sequence?  I can do it by matchframing back to the masterclip for each cut and accessing its source settings, but that's pretty tedious...

Thanks!

Uninstall Effects on Project

$

Hi all,

Just had a quick question regarding an uninstall. My MC7 has been acting buggy for like two years now and I sort of got used to it, but working on a properly functioning system this summer sparked me to stop being a lazy *** and actually fix it. Plus, it's now refusing to get through startup without a segmentation fault unless I restart the computer each time.

My question is: I have a medium-large project in progress right now, and I'm unclear on whether the uninstall will be totally fine or if I should just put up with Avid not working until I've finished the project and can risk it (we're talking 25 minutes of film with synced audio plus effects, coloring, etc).

So, is the uninstall too risky, or is it not risky at all and totally worth it?

Thanks,

Nick

Retain all original audio tracks when transcoding clips in timeline

$

In an offline/online workflow, I cut from low res proxy transcodes and then relink to the AMA source and re-transcode to high res DnxHR. The problem is that sometimes I want to cut in additional nat sounds for mix that were ignored in the offline.

Match-framing back from the timeline, I only get the new High Res Video track - the audio is no longer attached. Is there any way to force Avid to not only transcode the track featured in the timeline, but also keep all child audio tracks linked to the new master clip?

A workaround is to relink to the low res, but that sometimes proves to be problematic.

My current workaround is to use the search to find the offline version of the clip in question, go to the same timecode and then replace edit it into the audio tracks which proves to be tedious at times.

v8.5 - auto release IO when switching to background

In v 8.4.x, hiding MC (switching it to the background) automatically disabled the Hardware IO.  Very useful.

In v8.5 this no longer seems to work.

I hope this will come back or be made a user option.

MC8.5 Background Services not starting on any profile except for one.

After years of FCP7, my organization if finally pivoting back to AVID. I'm building out a couple new edit stations for my location, so these are brand new machines, fresh installs of Media Composer 8.5, all systems have only been up and running for about a week.

On my MacPro, I noticed yesterday that Avid Background Services was failing to start on my Administrator profile (icon would turn and stay red). After further testing, I was unable to start the background service on any user profile installed on this machine except for one. Somehow, this one standard user profile allows the user to start background services normally (icon turns green) while no other user profiles, not even the Administrator profile, can successfully start background services.

This feels like a permissions issue, as if the one working user profile has somehow locked out all other profiles from starting the background service. Media Composer and all other software appears to work normally across all user profiles, the issue I'm having is just with starting background services. This system has one Admin user profile, and then 4 Standard user profiles that each of our editors individually log into.

Luckily, I recently cloned by system drive before this issue popped up, so unless I can discover the root cause and correct it, I will just reclone this system to it's last good state. But would be good to know how/why this happened to prevent it from occuring again. None of my other systems see to be experiencing the issue yet, however we're just starting to put the systems into service...

Here are my system specs, it should be one of the AVID qualified Mac systems:

Mac Pro - OS 10.11.3

(Late 2013)

3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5

16 GB RAM/500 GB System drive

AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB

Thanks for any help/advice on how to troubleshoot!

Relinking issue

So I have created several projects, including an hour long concert film and had saved all the media files to an external hard drive. The project resided on the computer's hard drive. I want to take the project to another computer so I copied the project files to the same hard drive that is holding the media files.

Before taking it to another computer, I tried launching the project from said hard drive. The project and bins all open fine, but I get nothing but Media Offline on all the files. I tentatively tried the 'Link to Media' function but there doesn't seem to be a way to select all files (or I could be missing something).

Any help would be appreciated!

happy/sad 8.5 and beyond

Although i've been dealing with some bugs as expected. I want to say i REALLY like 8.5 and all the updates it has brought. I Don't mind the reorginizing of menus, in fact i feel that they are better suited now. High visibilty editing is great! But, speaking of visibility, one of my lomg time requests for an update is being able to see audio waveforms in the source monitor when loading the clip from a bin. That black screen, ugh. yes i use toggle in timeline but it has always been just an extra step that takes me out of an edit. Being able to move clips up and down from track to track with keyboard is the other one that i still hold out hope for. With previous version updates of muting clips (woohoo!), maybe there's a chance. Keep up the good work AVID!

can't uninstall MC 7.0.5

$

Hello,

I am trying to uninstall MC 7.0.5. When I run /Applications/Avid_Uninstallers/Media Composer/Media Composer Uninstaller after it asks for my credentials and the uninstaller GUI is open I get an error stating 'Error: couldn't install helper tool'.

I also mounted the install disk image and I get the exact same thing.

I've also tried a 7.0.4.4 disk image uninstaller and got the same error.

I'm running as admin.

Mac Pro "trashcan". 8 core. 32GB RAM, 35 GB disk space remaining.

I had MC 8.5 loaded at one time for testing but had to roll back. I had used it's uninstaller at that time. I wonder if this is the cause.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
