how do I get a clip list (music list) out of my MC?

I need to complete a music list for my producer. It has to include music title (= clip name) and duration of use. Composer, publisher, etc will be added later in Excel.

I generated an EDL with clip names included but when I open it in a text editor all I see is is √œ“D≈“†“≈≈Ɔ“≈√œ“DçBÜ√K††00±ç††††††††††∆“œM†√Ã…P†NAM≈:††œP≈N≈“_AUD…œ.A…∆ç00000±†œP≈N≈“††A±†††√†††††††††††††±0:00:00.00†±0:00:0∑.05†±0:00:00.00†±0:00:0∑.05熆††††††††∆“œM†√Ã…P†NAM≈:††3∑3±¥≤_◊œ“S≈†‘HAN†Yœ ad nausem...

Consolidating the music tracks and exporting the bin as ALE isn't an option, that way I get the track info but not the actual duration of music use.

I could do it manually and spend several hours doing it but I figure since this sort of work happens a thousand times a day all over the planet there MUST be a simple solution.

Does anyone have one?

convert 23.98 to 24

Hello,

I have a project done at 24p/1080 and after sending a final output our for color grading I have received a number of color timed ProResHQ Quicktime back but it's at 23.98. I'm finding it quite tedious to import those 23.98 QTs (which become 24 when in the existing project) and trying to cut them back in over the audio. Is there a way to convert 23.98 quicktimes to 24?  It doesn't seem like the media needs to change, just the metadata telling the software at which speed to play.

 

Is there such a tool that can alter a file to become 24 rather than 23.98?

Is there a method in MC to bring 23.98 qt into a 24 project and have it read it as 24?

I'll have the color house resend files if needed but there's a huge delay with this.

Unable to view media in source browser

I've just updated to MC 8.6 and the new source browser will not preview media files. When I link the media files into a bin they play back fine via AMA. If I double click the media in the source browser I get an error message "Item will be loaded into source monitor after processing". I have left the clips in the source browser for a while to allow them time to "process" but they still won't play. Can anybody help? Ta.

Avid EDL Manager Instruction Manual for MC 7.0.4

Hi, guys.

     I had to revert back to Avid 7.0.4 and need the EDL mananger instruction manual.  The one that comes with the program itself is out of date.  Does anyone know where I can find a manual that actually matches up with the program?  

MC 8.6 bug - can't copy audiosuite effect on multiple clips, anymore

Usually, I mark the audio clips in the timeline, then doubleclick my audio suite preset (a saved effect in the bin, e.g. compressor) and all clips should have the effect, now.

But that seems to be broken, now. I have to add the effect on every single clip, now.

Can't relink AMA files to EDL made from AMA Edit

Hi,

     I'm working with EDL Manager in MC 7.0.4 and doing a test workflow that is not working.

     I make a test edit using AMA linked media.

     I then open EDL Manager and make an EDL from the sequence.

     I then send the EDL to a new bin and I get an offline version of the original sequence and an offline version of the ama clip.

     I can't figure out any way to relink the clip in the new bin so that the edl-created seuqence will be online.

     Someone suggested selecting the AMA clip in bin 1 and the offline clip in bin 2 and then using relink 'Selected items in all open bins', but that option is greyed out.

     How would one go about getting that EDL back online?  Thanks!

8.6 Dongle backwards compatibility

Hi everyone,

I am on the verge of a fresh install of 8.6, and before I update my dongle (currently running MC 8.4) I was just wondering what versions my dongle will be able to go back to? It's changed in the last few years, but as long as I can go back to any version 8 I guess I'm happy.

Moving Avid subscription to my macbook

Hi there,

I'm moving my computer from an imac to my new macbook...and my Avid subscription with it.

I set up my new macbook from my time machine backup.

Then I deactivated my Avid subscription on my imac - restarted my macbook, and went to activate it there.  It was already activated, but when I tried to deactivate it came up with:

 

Failed deactivation: 0 Deactivation OK. No record of this device was found.

 

Any ideas?!!

Avid --> Resolve CDL Values Workflow

Hello I am working on a show cutting on Media Composer 7, I will be using EDLs generated in Avid to relink to Camera Master in Resolve 12.5. 

The EDL's generated in Avid contain CDL information from the On-Set Colorists one-light quick color pass of the dailies. I would like to be able to generate a .cube or cdl file from each individual shot I pull that contains the on-set colorists cdl values. I will be delivering 10-bit DPX files to our artists for vfx production.

I have confirmed that the necessary CDL information is baked into the metadata brought into Avid- and I have confirmed that it is on EDLs exported through Avid's EDL manager. I just need to know how to get that info routed through Resolve and into a file I can hand to out VFX team so that they have a LUT that matches perfectly the on-set colorists look.

8.6 crashes on 'Initializing' at startup

Hi. Anybody else experience intermittent crashes on 'Initializing' at startup? It happens most of the time, but not always.

FilmScribe Templates?

Hi,

    I am working with Avid Media Composer 7.0.4 and trying to learn about Film Scribe.  The instruction manuals that come with both EDL Mananger and Film Scribe are out of date.  The one for FilmScribe lists all these instructions for using templates that make no sense.  Also, it says that I can create change lists that can be read in excel, but the only one I can create opens in my web browser.  How are people supposed to learn these programs when there is no proper instruction manual?  I can't find any decent tutorials online.  Does anyone have any advice on how to understand FilmScribe?

I have footage supplied by Sony Z150 shot at 4K and on the drive as an MXF file.  I am able to AMA but when i load the clip I get " Exception:CDCIReader_UNKNOWN_COMPRESSION_TYPE ".  I also cannot import the file directly or transcode it.  I have the latest Sony AMA plugin and the system I am running is Avid 8.6 on an Imac (OSX version 10.10.5), 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5, 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory and AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB Graphics card.  At the moment I am transcoding via Resolve but it is taking way too long and i need to start cutting.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can Same User Profile/Settings folder be used in Mac and PC?

Hi,

     This is a question I've had for a while... Can your custom user settings folder be used in both Mac and PC?  Meaning...can the exact same folder be dropped into Avid on both operating systems? Or do you have to make a custom user settings for each operating system?

     Also, how often do you need to change your user settings?  Is it only when you bump up a whole version, for example 6 to 7?  or do you have to make a new user profile for each incremental version change (within 7, for example)?

    I have been able to use the same user profile across different versions, within the mac OS, but would like to know what the proper procedure is.  Thanks.

 

 

Let's Make the Next MediaMover or MDV

Hello Everyone,

I think native, flexible media managementis lacking in Avid. "Have you tried Media Tool?", you might ask. Here's my problem with Media Tool - it's not easy to use. For example:

1. An Assistant Editor finishes logging, then wants to transfer the project to an Editor. He'll bundle up the assets in one folder, grab the Avid project folder, and send them over to the Editor. Might be over the network (peer-to-peer) or through sneaker net.

2. An Editor finishes his project, and wants to do a backup. Same as before - he'll bundle up the assets, grab the Avid project, and store them on backup drives.

3. We produce events that require last-minute changes. Plus, there's on-location editing that requires gathering assets from multiple users. So bundling all the assets you need before traveling is critical. Hotel networks aren't built for large file transfers.

For years, the alternatives were MediaMover and MDV. MediaMover can do all the above, but MDV is the best I've ever used. It's simple, easy, and fast.

Here's the problem with MDV. (Problems, really.)

1. It's Windows only. There are ways of making it work in OS X, but you hate them all. How do I know? Because it keeps coming up.
2. It has limitations in Wine - neither bin sifting nor folder scanning works.
3. It's abandoned.

So what would it take to create a native OS X media management tool?

First, we need to know what we're working with, the data. Are there available file specs on:

1. Media Stream Managers (MSM's)
2. Projects
3. Bins
4. Metadata layout on individual MXF's

Is it just a matter of asking someone from Avid HQ? Do you know anybody?

It's clear we need something. But everyone's busy, you know... editing. Plus you're thinking, "What can I do? I'm not a programmer!" Well, I'm an anomaly. I do what you do, but I also have some development/IT chops. They just need some refreshing. And this project would be worth refreshing them.

So what do you think? Is it worth making the next MDV? Are there any others like me who would be interested in contributing? Do you have any contacts that could help point me in a direction?

FS7 Footage compatability on MC7

Hi all.

Mind bent from searching for this answer so here you go.

Going to hire an FS7 for the first time on an actual shoot this weekend.  

Is it fairly straightforward to import into MC 7.0.5?

Are any record settings ok to use?  Are their bit rate / resolution max. settings that it can handle?

Could I for instance record any of the following settings without problems?

XAVC-I mode: 4K 25P VBR, bit rate 250Mbps, MPEG-4 H.264/AVC

XAVC-I mode:QFHD 25P CBG, bit rate 250Mbps, MPEG-4 H.264/AVC

XAVC-L HD 50 mode: VBR, maximum bit rate 50Mbps, MPEG-4 H.264/AVC 

I don't need to output this in 4k, But I understand that there's a quality bump from shooting in 4k even if downscaling to HD 1080p.

Does anyone have a link for sample files that mirror those straight outta camera, so I can test?

Missing LinkedTo sound after ISIS to iMac move...

Hi,

My search skills may be weak, but I can’t find an answer to this specific issue. I haven’t had much cause to ask for help before either, as I’ve been cutting on Avid for twenty years, and am now even teaching it, so I should be able to troubleshoot most things. However, this one has got me stumped!

I was cutting a feature in June, and my two assistants and I spent the first five weeks on set on an ISIS system with three machines all running 8.5.2. My co-editor is now working with the director, and they have moved on to a standalone iMac, with the media all on a RAID-striped drive. 

The problem is that they are missing sound from about 20 scenes (a quarter of the film!) These sound files do not show up in the Media Tool, so from initial investigations, it seems what’s happened is that over a week-long period, my assistants (or possibly I) accidentally Linked To rather than Imported the sound files, before AutoSyncing, sometimes Grouping with multiple cameras, and then assembling multiple versions of sequences for all of these 20 scenes. In transferring over from the ISIS Avids, it seems the iMac Avid has lost the links to this sound. 

We do still have all the original sound files obviously. So of course we can re-Import all these sound files into Avid, and will no doubt need to do that anyway so they then exist as Avid Media within our project. And, worst case scenario, we could then manually relink them to the sequence.

But what I really want to do instead is somehow relink that freshly Imported audio to all the sync clips and groups clips and sequences we have already created. That would be a lot more useful and a lot less time-consuming for us.

Please please please somebody tell me this is possible! And thanks for reading this far!

FilmConvert installation crashes MC

Hi everybody!

Please take care while using the FilmConvert Plugin.

Maybe i installed the wrong update - not sure yet....

But upgrading the FC AVX plugin from 1.0.3. to 1.0.5 ruined my MC installation.

The whole AVX folder has been emtied completely!"

MC didnt strat anymore after installing the update.

Spinning Rainbow

I am editing in a 720 59.94 project.  All of my footage started in a 1080 23.976 project (it was all transcoded to DNXHD 115 MXF), then I opened the bins into my 720 project (the format that my piece will air in).

When I scroll around fast in a long clip, I get the spinning rainbow ball.  Sometimes I crash, sometimes it just takes some time to catch up.

What is making my system less responsive?  

I have the latest version of avid and Apple OS X.  I use a promise pegaus R4 drive with thunderbolt 2 and an aja io4k output device.  64 GB RAM.  Mac Pro Late 2013 - 3 GHz 8 Core.  AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB

 

I created new user settings and threw out my old ones.  Anything I can do to help?

8.5 and Quicktime_OPServer (not responding) issues

Getting the spinning beach ball of death pretty frequently. I've found that force quitting the "Quicktime_OPServer (not responding)" error in the Activity Monitor applications gets me a reprieve from the governor for a while. But rather than doing this constantly, is there something more permanent I could do to avoid the issue all together?

Struggling with relink to transcoded footage

I have transcoded some AMA footage and I'm now trying to get the original sequences to relink to the new footage. I have the sequences in the bin with the transcoded footage (with all other bins closed) and I have selected everything in the bin and chosen Relink with 'Selected Items in all Open Bins' selected. I am not quite sure what to do about ignoring extensions or characters & 'original' and 'target' - I have tried different settings around this. All the new clips have the suffix '.new.01' added to the orignal name.

Everything I have tried has been unsuccessful.

Any help greatly appreciated.
